Quote:
"As gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth come under more and more scrutiny, as suicides and homelessness continue to rise ... the adult gay community should be doing all it can to make the world a better place for its youth."
With activist teens and television stars coming out at a younger age each year, Wilson Cruz stood out as a brave soul who was both.
As the sensitive, slightly glam Rickie Vasquez on the hit Fox TV show "My So-Called Life," Cruz found thousands of fans happy to see an actor play a smart African-American kid going through the normal problems of growing up.
While the drama in front of the cameras played out, Cruz was going through some of his own personal crises. The pressures of instant fame, combined with the burden of being a role model for queer youth, weighed heavily for a while.
Cruz is now a favorite gay icon. He has appeared in some classic queer indie films, including "All Over Me" and "Johns." He got more mainstream attention for roles in "Supernova," "Nixon" and "Joyride," as well as for his TV work on "Party of Five."
