Sol Kelley-Jones |
Possibly the youngest gay rights activist ever, 14-year-old Sol Kelley-Jones provides a human face to the thousands of children in LGBT families who lack the basic legal protections that most take for granted.
The daughter of Madison, Wisconsin residents Joann Kelley and Sunshine Jones, Sol has spoken before city councils and state assemblies, and helped organize Cootie Shots, a educational youth play about bullying and sissy-baiting. She also aided a successful effort to save the Madison Teacher's Union's domestic partner benefits.
A friend to Wisconsin lesbian politician Tammy Baldwin and first lady Hillary Rodham-Clinton, Sol is charming proof that same-sex families can nurture amazing kids. She's been honored by COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) and GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Educational Network), and has been featured in numerous national news articles. "Speaking as a kid in a lesbian family," she says, "I need each of you to help me bring about the day when the schools are a safe place for all children."
