Grace Jones
Real Name: Grace Mendoza
Birthplace: Spanishtown, Jamaica.
With half a dozen albums with jazz, disco, and reggae influences, Grace
Jones has become an icon in pop music, and a favorite among gay
listeners. No
party would be complete without a dose of "Pull Up to the Bumper," or
"Warm Leatherette." Her ballads include the classics "Private Life,"
"Walking in
the Rain," and brilliant covers of songs by Brian Ferry, David Bowie,
and Sting.
A former model and preacher's daughter who became part of the Studio
54/Andy Warhol '70s in-crowd, Jones has performed at events for ACT UP,
the Gay Games, and other queer causes, and is known as much for her
outrageous photo sessions as for her music.
Her guest-starring roles are always a highlight of otherwise silly
films. As an immortal performance artist in Vamp, she was
costumed and painted by
gay artist and longtime pal Keith Haring. Her Playboy spread with
then-boyfriend Dolph Lundgren, and cameos on Pee Wee's Christmas
Special, only further her reputation as a vixen-like diva with a
sense of humor.
Fans lucky enough to enjoy her live shows know that while they usually
fail to start on time, they end up going late into the night.
